Latvia

  • 1939 Hitler and Stalin signed secret “Sphere of Influence” agreement. Divided Eastern Europe between 2 countries. The dividing line became the northern border of Lithuania with the USSR controlling Latvia. Church and synagogue properties nationalized. Followers of religion persecuted.
  • 1941 Germany attacks USSR and now Germany occupies Latvia. Annihilation of Jews began immediately with 70,000 killed. 
  • 1944 USSR attacks and takes over Latvia. Oppression of religion returns.
  • Approximately 610,000 or 1/3 of the Latvian population either perished or was deported.
  • 1991 Latvia regains independence.
